The part of Auckland every venue guide skips

South Auckland is where a huge share of the city’s biggest weddings actually happen — Samoan, Tongan, Indian, Filipino, Fijian — and almost every “best Auckland wedding venues” list ignores it entirely in favour of Kumeu vineyards.

So this guide is built differently. The country estates and gardens are here, and they are lovely. But so is the thing that actually decides a 300-guest wedding: which venues let you bring your own caterer.

We checked all 171 operating wedding venues across Auckland. Only 40 allow outside catering. Only four allow it and take 250 or more guests. Three of those four are in the south or the east.

Estates, gardens and barns

Karaka Pavilion — Karaka

The biggest true wedding venue in the region: 350 seated in the Pavilion, 500 cocktail, and an auditorium beyond that. Nine heritage stables sit on the grounds and they are free to photograph in — which gives you more variety in one place than almost anywhere else in Auckland. The Pavilion has side awnings that lift to open onto the gardens, so you get indoor light with outdoor spill.

Two things to check first: weddings are not permitted Sunday to Thursday, and catering is from an approved list only — no outside caterers, no self-catering. Closed 21 December to 9 January. Last song 11pm.

Bracu Estate — Bombay

New Zealand’s largest privately owned olive grove: 257 acres with around 173 acres planted in olives, framed by the Bombay hills. The look is Mediterranean and there is nothing else like it in Auckland. The Pavilion takes 160 seated, 190 cocktail. Sold by the Simunovich family in 2020 and renamed from Simunovich Olive Estate, so older lists still use the old name.

Deer Valley — Ararimu

A 21 by 8 metre glasshouse marquee on a deer farm, with the Hunua Ranges behind and a resident herd on the paddocks. 100 seated. Ceremony under the oak among the deer, or in the glasshouse. Bring your own caterer — there is no kitchen, so they must be fully mobile — and BYO alcohol.

Seasonal and scarce: last weekend of November to last weekend of March, no Sundays or public holidays, and only six to ten weddings a season. Book very early.

The White Barn — Bombay

Clean white interior, sliding barn door, French doors onto a stone-walled garden, five acres of rolling country. 130 seated with an enclosed barn and covered veranda, so weather does not move the plan. Accommodation for six on site including groom’s quarters.

Hedges Estate — Waiuku

An orangerie glasshouse for the reception, 120 seated, with a choice of a native forest ceremony or an English garden. Onsite florist. Note there are two live websites — the current one is hedges.estate; the older hedgesestate.co.nz still advertises the 2017/18 season.

Castaways Resort — Karioitahi Beach

Clifftop ceremonies above a wild black-sand beach on the Āwhitu Peninsula, 120 guests, with an indoor ceremony option and ocean views either way. The most dramatic sunset portraits we shoot all year. Dellrian Gardens — Waiuku

A festoon-lit open barn beside a private creekside garden, with an onsite flower farm doing seed-to-vase florals. 100 seated. BYO alcohol and open catering, and one of the very few venues in Auckland that publishes real per-person pricing. Hard 10pm finish, and the open-sided barn is exposed in a Waiuku southerly.

Te Hihi Estate — Karaka

Ninety-two acres of exclusive-use estate with a private lake, manicured gardens, a nine-hole golf course and a six-bedroom villa sleeping fourteen. 100 seated indoors. Whole-property hire, so it is one number rather than a per-head quote.

Beaufords in Totara Park — The Gardens

A historic homestead among tōtara right beside the Auckland Botanic Gardens, with an all-clear marquee for 140. Two minutes from the Southern Motorway, which is rare for a garden venue — and the clear marquee gives beautifully soft, even light when it rains.

Puketutu Island Estate — Māngere

Exclusive use of the estate on Te Motu a Hiaroa, about 30 minutes from the CBD, reached by a permanent causeway so guests simply drive on. A Spanish Mission homestead, sweeping lawns and the Manukau Harbour beyond. Note that exclusive use covers the estate, not the whole island.

Auckland Botanic Gardens — Manurewa

Four separate ceremony gardens across 64 hectares — The Glade, the Rock Garden, the Herb Garden, the Edible Walled Garden — with the Huakaiwaka Visitor Centre and Café Miko for the reception. Between 25 and 200 guests.

Read the rules before you fall for it: there is no exclusive use, so the gardens stay open to the public. Confetti is banned (bubbles only). No chairs or tables provided. No vehicles in the gardens. Café Miko is the sole accredited caterer, though you can bring picnic food, and you may supply your own alcohol free to guests without a special licence.

Pukekohe Park — Pukekohe

Two hundred seated in the recently renovated Oaks Lounge on the first floor of the grandstand, looking out over the racecourse. Marquee sites on the grounds and the circuit itself. Wide-open turf makes the big group shot easy. Check the race and motorsport calendar early — it blocks dates.

LaValla Estate — Tuakau

A former Marist seminary with period architecture, big grounds and gardens, and an Event Hall that seats 300 — plus accommodation on site, which almost nothing else at that size offers. Most directories file it under Waikato rather than Auckland, so it is easy to miss. Check which room you are being quoted: the 300-seat Event Hall is separate from the 120-capacity function rooms.

Nathan Homestead — Manurewa

A 1925 homestead kept largely original, nine acres, a walled garden and a croquet lawn. Capacity 200. It is a working arts centre, so confirm Saturday evening access and check gallery programming before you commit.

More worth knowing

Brookby Barn (Brookby) is full BYO — food, décor, drink, music — on a working animal farm, with a B&B loft and exclusive use 8am to 11.30pm. St Margaret’s (Karaka) takes 120 with a garden, pond and jetty, BYO with catering available, licensed bar staff supplied, and weddings from $1,800. Tabula Rasa (Ramarama) has an infinity pool and sweeping lawns for 100. Winsford Gardens (Drury) is a purpose-built photography garden that publishes almost nothing — you have to ring them. Alcova (Karaka) is a calm European-styled interior capped at 80. The Kentish Hotel (Waiuku) is a historic pub with eleven rooms; the ceremony happens at the Tamakae Reserve rotunda by the river, which is public land, so check whether a council booking is needed.

300 guests, and your own caterer

If your family is doing the food, or you have a caterer who knows how to cook for your people, most Auckland wedding venues are simply not an option — their kitchen is the only kitchen. These are the ones that are.

Manukau Event Centre — the one to know

A 930 square metre ballroom seating 400, with a stage, dance floor, LED lighting, a décor showroom and a bridal room. And this, in their own words: bring your own food, and their kitchen staff will serve it at no extra charge.

That combination — 400 seats and outside food served for free — does not exist anywhere else in Auckland that we can find. Their in-house menus also cover Pacific Island, Indian, Middle Eastern and European if you would rather not organise it. Licensed bar with a price-match, free onsite parking, from $4,000. Typically booked twelve to eighteen months out. Get the no-charge serving arrangement in writing.

Due Drop Events Centre — Wiri

The biggest room in the south by a distance: 700 in the BNZ Theatre, up to 1,200 conference style, and a clear-span arena that takes 3,000 standing. Distinctive Māori-designed architecture with a tāhuhu-inspired truss.

The catch: Collective are the exclusive caterers. No outside food. For many families that rules it out despite the size — worth knowing before you tour it.

Pukeoware Hall — Waiuku

Capacity 300, a well-equipped kitchen and full self-catering. Purpose-built in 2006. It is a plain hall and it is unstaffed, so you supply everything and style it yourself — but it is the highest-capacity self-catering room in Franklin and the cost difference against a function centre is enormous.

The other halls

Pukekohe East Hall — 200, built-in kitchen, self-catering, bookings by text only. Ramarama Hall — 200 standing, but a kitchenette rather than a commercial kitchen, so your caterer must be fully self-contained. Alfriston Hall — 120 dining, 150 standing, and the best booking window of any of them: 5am to midnight, seven days including public holidays.

All are unstaffed council venues. Budget for styling, and check whether you need a special licence if alcohol is being sold rather than supplied free.

Clubs, marae and one aircraft hangar

Bruce Pulman Park (Takanini) — 180 banquet in the Arena Conference Centre, 200 cocktail upstairs at Teamsports, with lodge accommodation on site. Sports tournaments dominate the calendar, so ask early.

Navigation Homes Stadium (Pukekohe) — the PKJ Lounge with a private bar and no minimum bar spend, which is a genuine saving on a big night. Formerly Growers Stadium and ECOLight Stadium.

Papakura RSA — 150 for dinner, in-house catering, licensed club bar. Trivision Event Centre (Papatoetoe) — an Indo-Fijian-run modern hall with in-house decoration, strong fit for Indo-Fijian and Indian weddings, but it publishes no capacity or catering rules at all, so everything needs a phone call. Texas Event Centre (Manukau) — 220 dining, 300 cocktail, though its trading status needs confirming before you rely on it.

Papakura Marae — the Te Ngira wharenui takes 150, with overnight space for up to 70. It is strictly alcohol-free, smoke-free and drug-free, and gang regalia is not permitted. That rules out a drinking reception and makes it ideal for a dry ceremony and hākari.

NZ Warbirds (Ardmore) — a hangar full of vintage aircraft. Photographically it is superb: open hangar doors work like a giant softbox and the apron gives you enormous wide frames. It is a live airfield, so dates are never guaranteed.

Airport Gateway Hotel and Jet Park (Māngere) — function rooms for 100 to 200 with rooms upstairs, which matters when family are flying in from the islands or overseas.

At a glance

Guest numbers and catering rules as published by each venue on its own website in August 2026. Two venues publish no capacity — ask them directly. Confirm before you book: venues change caterers, seasons and licences.

• Villa Maria Estate, Māngere — no longer available for private functions.
• Vodafone Events Centre — renamed Due Drop Events Centre in 2022. Still trading.
