For two people, often not. A celebrant, two witnesses and a place you are allowed to stand is the whole legal requirement, and much of what makes Queenstown worth flying to is outdoors and free. Our location guide covers those spots.

A venue starts earning its keep when you want three things: shelter you can rely on, somewhere to feed people, and somewhere to get ready that is not a hotel room. If you want none of those, skip it.

Fewer than you would hope, and almost nobody publishes the number — which is why the first table on this page exists. Around twenty venues in the district state a genuine minimum of twenty people or fewer, and a handful go down to two.

The pattern is that lodges and small estates will take a couple on a stated elopement package, while function centres and larger wineries will not, because their pricing assumes a room full of people.

It is the amount you must spend on food and drink regardless of how many people turn up. A venue with a $6,000 minimum will happily host eight guests — you just pay as though you brought forty.

For a small wedding this is the single biggest hidden cost, and it is the question to ask first, before availability and before the hire fee. A venue with no hire fee and a large minimum can cost more than one with a large hire fee and none.

For a Saturday between December and March, twelve to eighteen months is normal for the well-known venues. Winter and weekdays are dramatically easier — often a few months.

Elopement packages at the smaller places move faster than full weddings and can sometimes be had inside a season. If your dates are fixed and short, ask about weekdays before you widen your venue search; a Tuesday in February opens doors a Saturday will not.

Almost always yes for photography and the celebrant. Catering and beverage are where venues get restrictive — many require you to use their kitchen and bar, and that is usually where the minimum spend lives.

Ask specifically about preferred supplier lists. Some venues require you to choose from theirs; others simply recommend. It changes who you can book, and it is easier to find out before you fall in love with the room.

This is the real argument for booking a venue rather than a viewpoint. Ask two questions: is there a wet-weather space that fits everyone, and at what time must you decide to move indoors.

That second one catches people out. Some venues need the call made the morning before so they can reset a room. Queenstown showers are local and short — it can rain at Frankton and be clear twenty minutes up the road — so a venue that lets you decide an hour out is worth more than one with a prettier backup room.

A number can, and they are listed in their own section above — several have dedicated helipads. The rest cannot, either because of terrain, neighbours, or their own consent conditions.

Queenstown has the most venues, the most suppliers and the most competition for dates. Wānaka is an hour away, meaningfully calmer, and the light holds longer on that side of the range. Cromwell and Gibbston give you vineyards at lower prices than the lakefront. Tekapo and Glenorchy give you scenery almost nobody else has, and very few suppliers.

The trade is always the same: the further you go from Queenstown, the better the exclusivity and the harder the logistics. Beyond about an hour out, budget for your suppliers travelling and for the fact that some simply will not.
