Auckland Elopement
Packages

A black-sand beach, the city registry, an island in the gulf, or an all-inclusive clifftop day at Castaways where we bring the celebrant, witnesses, hair and makeup and styling. Several ways to elope around Auckland, one team for all of them.

Check your date All elopements

SuperGibo photographs elopements right across Auckland — west-coast black-sand beaches, the city and the registry office, Waiheke and the gulf islands, regional parks and bush, or a place that already means something to you. We also run one all-inclusive elopement day at Castaways Resort on Auckland’s west coast — clifftop ceremonies above Karioitahi Beach, black-sand portraits and sunset over the Tasman. It suits couples marrying with a small guest list, and photography and film come from the same team.

Why elope

A smaller day is not
a smaller wedding

Couples come to this for different reasons and almost none of them start with money, although it usually costs a fraction of a full wedding. The most common one we hear is that the wedding had started to feel like an event they were hosting rather than a day they were having.

An elopement removes the guest list, the seating plan, the running sheet and the obligation invitations. What is left is the part that actually mattered: the two of you, someone to marry you, and a place you chose because you love it rather than because it seats a hundred and forty.

It also changes the photographs. Nobody is waiting on you, so nothing is rushed and you are not performing for a room. We can walk somewhere a bridal party could never reach, stay for the light instead of leaving for the reception, and let the day breathe. That is why elopement galleries so often look more like the couple than wedding galleries do.

Where to elope

Auckland gives you more options than you think

Most couples arrive thinking an elopement means a beach or the registry office. Auckland has both, and quite a few things in between. Here is how they actually differ on the day.

West coast black sand

  • Karioitahi, Muriwai, Bethells, Piha
  • Dramatic cliffs, dark sand, big Tasman sunsets
  • Wind and weather are part of the look
  • Public beaches — other people will be around

Castaways Resort

  • A private clifftop above Karioitahi Beach
  • No strangers in your ceremony photographs
  • Restaurant and rooms on site, indoor wet-weather option
  • The all-inclusive day set out below

City & the registry office

  • A short legal ceremony, then portraits in the city
  • Britomart lanes, the Domain, the waterfront
  • The quickest and cheapest way to marry here
  • Works well on a weekday, in any weather

Waiheke & the gulf

  • A ferry ride and the day already feels away
  • Vineyards, olive groves and quiet bays
  • Easy to turn into a night or two
  • Book the ferry early over summer

Regional parks & bush

  • Waitakere ranges, Shakespear, Tawharanui
  • Green, sheltered and usually near-empty midweek
  • Some sites need a council permit — we will tell you which
  • Good rain fallback when the coast is blowing

Somewhere that is yours

  • A backyard, a boat, a rooftop, a family farm
  • The place matters more than the postcard
  • Photographs end up more personal, every time
  • Tell us the spot and we will make it work

Marrying in the South Island instead? See Queenstown elopement packages — helicopter landings, lakes, vineyards and night-sky portraits.

Everywhere except Castaways is photography-led: you arrange the celebrant and we cover the day, priced from Services & Pricing. The Castaways day below is the one where we arrange the whole thing.

Planning

How soon can we actually do this?

Sooner than most people expect. New Zealand has one of the simplest marriage processes anywhere, and an elopement has almost none of the moving parts that make a wedding take a year.

The legal part

  • Apply for a marriage licence online — from here or from overseas
  • The fee is $158, paid to Births, Deaths and Marriages
  • Allow at least three working days before the ceremony
  • Once issued it is valid for three months
  • No citizenship or residency requirement — visitors can marry here

A comfortable timeline

  • 3–6 months is relaxed — first pick of dates and vendors
  • 6–8 weeks is plenty for most elopements
  • 2–3 weeks is doable if your date is flexible
  • Summer and public holidays book out first
  • Midweek is easier, quieter and often cheaper

What you actually decide

  • A date, or a window of a few days
  • Where — we will talk you through the options
  • Photo only, or photo and film
  • Which vendors you want, if any
  • What you are doing afterwards

That is the whole list. No seating plan, no catering headcount, no run sheet to sign off. Most of our elopement couples make every one of those decisions in a single phone call.

The people

Who else you might want on the day

You need a celebrant and two witnesses. Everything else is optional. These are the categories couples ask us about most, and what is worth knowing before you book each one.

Celebrant

  • The only supplier you legally need
  • Must be a registered marriage celebrant
  • Ask how they handle wind and rain outdoors
  • A good one keeps a short ceremony from feeling thin

Hair & makeup

  • Book earlier than you think for weekend dates
  • Ask for a coastal or windproof finish if you are outdoors
  • Getting ready is often the first thing we photograph
  • A trial is worth it if you are flying in

Gown & suit

  • Hire is common for elopements and travels far better
  • Movement matters more than structure — you will be walking
  • Check the hem against sand, mud and rock
  • Bring shoes you can actually reach the spot in

Flowers

  • A bouquet and a buttonhole is usually the whole order
  • Hardy stems hold up in coastal wind — ask your florist
  • Dried arrangements survive a full day and travel well
  • They appear in nearly every frame, so it is money well spent

Styling & hire

  • An arch, a rug, seating, or a picnic setup
  • Somebody has to set it up and pack it down — check who
  • Less is genuinely more on a wild coastline
  • Included as standard in the Castaways day

Witnesses

  • New Zealand law needs two, present at the ceremony
  • Friends, family, or people we arrange for you
  • Nobody has to fly in just for a signature
  • Included as standard in the Castaways day

We keep a working list of the Auckland suppliers we actually stand beside on wedding days — celebrants, hair and makeup, florists, bridal couture, menswear, styling and hire. Have a look through vendors and venues we love, or tell us your date and we will make the introductions ourselves.

The all-inclusive day

Say I do with the ocean, the sunset and each other

Not everyone wants a hundred and fifty people watching. An elopement at Castaways is a whole wedding day for two, on the cliffs above Karioitahi Beach on Auckland’s west coast — about an hour from the city and a world away from it.

The reason we run these here rather than on a public beach is simple: it is a private clifftop resort. There are no dog walkers in your ceremony photographs, there is a restaurant and accommodation on site so you are not driving home afterwards, and there is a proper indoor option when the weather turns — which on that coast, it does.

What the Castaways day includes

This is not a photography package. It is the whole day.

Most photographers cover the hours and leave you to organise everything else. We do it the other way round.

We arrange

  • Your celebrant
  • Two witnesses, so you do not have to ask anyone to fly in
  • Hair and makeup artist
  • Flowers and buttonhole
  • The ceremony styling, facing the ocean

And the photography

  • Up to five hours of coverage
  • Unlimited fine art high-resolution images
  • Private downloadable online gallery
  • Drone coverage, conditions permitting
  • A wedding consultation before the day
The picnic

Then we feed you on the cliff

After the ceremony there is a full picnic setup — up to three hours at one of the spots around the resort, Karioitahi Beach and the falls.

Dried flower arrangement, a grazing platter, a small cake, a bottle of bubbles in a gold ice bucket, Antipodes water, table games, and a picnic basket with the useful extras — tripod, speaker, that sort of thing. Hot water bottles in winter, because it is the west coast and we are realistic. We set it all up and pack it all down.

Photographically this is the part that matters most. It is the only hour of the day where nothing is scheduled, nobody is watching, and you two actually relax — which is when the photographs stop looking like a wedding and start looking like you.

Plan A and Plan B

Outdoors facing the ocean, or indoors by the fire. Either way you are covered.

Weather

The west coast does what it wants

Karioitahi faces the Tasman. It is exposed, and that is exactly why it photographs the way it does — but it means a wet-weather plan is not optional.

Both the ceremony and the picnic can be set up outdoors facing the ocean or indoors by the fire, and the call gets made on the day rather than weeks out. Some of the best frames we have shot on that coast were in weather nobody would have chosen. Wind is not the enemy of a veil.

Afterwards

The ceremony is twenty minutes

Which leaves the rest of the day. This is the part couples underestimate, and the part that ends up in the album.

Portrait time, properly

  • An hour or two after the ceremony, just the two of you
  • No guests waiting, so nothing is hurried
  • We chase the light rather than the schedule
  • Golden hour is worth building the day around

Somewhere else entirely

  • Marry on the coast, drive somewhere different for portraits
  • Two locations in one day is normal for an elopement
  • Cliff, bush, city, harbour — pick two that feel like you
  • We handle the timing so you are not clock-watching

A picnic on the sand

  • Grazing platter, a small cake, a bottle of bubbles
  • The only hour of the day where nothing is scheduled
  • Photographically the best part of the day, every time
  • Set up and packed down for you at Castaways

Burgers, honestly

  • Some of our favourite frames are a takeaway on a tailgate
  • Fish and chips on the beach, still in the dress
  • Costs almost nothing and photographs beautifully
  • Nobody has ever regretted this one

Dinner somewhere good

  • A table for two, or for the handful who came
  • A restaurant beats a reception venue at this scale
  • We can cover the toast and leave you to your night
  • Ask us for places that suit a wedding dress

A party later on

  • Elope now, celebrate with everyone months later
  • Increasingly the most common way couples do this
  • You arrive at your own party already married
  • We can photograph that day too, or just the elopement

You can also add a session the next morning — a day-after shoot with no ceremony nerves, somewhere you could not fit into the day itself. It is the least stressful hour of photography you will ever do.

Film

The one thing couples
wish they had added

At a big wedding a film is a lovely extra. At an elopement it is closer to essential, for one specific reason: almost everyone who loves you was not there. Photographs tell them what it looked like. Only a film lets them hear the vows.

So we record the full ceremony as well as cutting a highlight film. The highlight is the one you will share — a few minutes, scored, the shape of the day. The full ceremony is the one you will actually rewatch: unedited, both sets of vows, the pauses, the laugh when the wind takes a page. Parents watch that one.

Because it is one team covering both, the film costs you nothing in photography. Nobody is stepping into anyone else’s frame, there is no second supplier to brief, and the audio gear is already on your celebrant before you have noticed it.

Questions

Eloping around Auckland — what people ask

How far ahead do we need to plan an elopement?

Three to six months is relaxed and gets you first pick of dates. Six to eight weeks is plenty for most elopements. Two to three weeks is doable if your date is flexible — the legal side only needs three working days, and there is no seating plan or catering headcount to build. Summer and public holidays go first, so ask early for those.

What does the marriage licence cost and how long does it take?

The licence fee is $158, paid to Births, Deaths and Marriages, and you can apply online from New Zealand or from overseas. Allow at least three working days before the ceremony. Once issued it is valid for three months. There is no citizenship or residency requirement — visitors can marry here. We are photographers rather than celebrants, so your celebrant will walk you through the form itself.

Can you recommend a celebrant, hair and makeup or a florist?

Yes. We keep a working list of the Auckland suppliers we actually stand beside on wedding days — celebrants, hair and makeup, florists, bridal couture, menswear, styling and hire. See vendors and venues we love, or tell us your date and we will make the introductions.

Why should we add film to an elopement?

Because almost everyone who loves you will not be there. Photographs show them what it looked like; only a film lets them hear the vows. We record the full ceremony unedited as well as cutting a short highlight film, and it is the same team on the same day, so nobody is stepping into anyone else’s frame.

How much time do we get for photographs after the ceremony?

As much as the day needs, which is the whole point. The ceremony itself is about twenty minutes. After that there are usually one to two hours of portraits with nobody waiting on you, and we plan around the light rather than a run sheet. Moving to a second location for portraits is normal.

What do people do after an elopement ceremony?

Anything from a picnic on the sand to dinner at a restaurant, and quite often takeaway burgers or fish and chips still in the dress — which photographs better than it sounds. Many couples also throw a proper party for everyone months later and arrive already married. We can cover as much or as little of that as you want.

Do we have to elope at Castaways?

Not at all. Castaways is the one place where we arrange the entire day for you — celebrant, witnesses, hair and makeup, styling and the picnic. Everywhere else around Auckland we come as your photographers and you bring your own celebrant. Both work; they are just priced differently.

Where else around Auckland can we elope?

West-coast black-sand beaches like Muriwai, Bethells and Piha; the city and the Auckland registry office; Waiheke and the gulf islands; regional parks such as Shakespear and Tawharanui; or somewhere that already means something to you — a backyard, a boat, a family farm. Some council sites need a permit and we will tell you which ones.

What does a non-Castaways elopement cost?

It is photography-led rather than all-inclusive, so it is priced by hours and whether you want film as well — see Services & Pricing. The Castaways packages below are the fixed all-inclusive option.

How many guests can we bring?

An elopement is designed for the two of you, and it works beautifully that way — but a small handful of people is fine. Tell us the number when you enquire and we will price it properly rather than surprising you later.

Do you really provide the celebrant and the witnesses?

Yes. Both are included. Nobody has to fly in, and you do not have to ask a stranger on the beach. You still need to apply for your marriage licence yourselves — that part is between you and the registry.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Everything has an indoor version. The ceremony and the picnic can both be set up inside by the fire, with ocean views, and the call is made on the day. On this coast that is not a fallback, it is part of the plan.

Can we stay the night?

Castaways has accommodation and a restaurant on site, so most couples do. It is an hour from the city and you will not want to drive back. Book that directly with the resort and tell us, so we can time the sunset shoot properly.

Is Karioitahi the same as Muriwai or Piha?

Same coast, same black sand, different feel. Karioitahi is further south on the Āwhitu Peninsula, and the cliffs are higher and emptier. You will not be sharing your ceremony with a car park full of surfers.
