North Shore Wedding Venues

The short answer: the North Shore is built for weddings of 120 to 180. Only five venues in the whole region — including the Hibiscus Coast — publish a capacity of 200 or more. If your guest list is bigger than that, you’ll either be crossing the bridge or building a marquee, and it’s better to know now than after four site visits.

What the Shore does have, better than anywhere else in Auckland, is water. Rangitoto sits in the frame from Narrow Neck, Cheltenham, Milford and Browns Bay in a way it does nowhere else.

This guide covers Devonport through to the Hibiscus Coast — Takapuna, Milford, the Bays, Albany, Whangaparāoa, Ōrewa and Silverdale. Everything here came from each venue’s own website. Where a venue doesn’t publish something, it says so, because “ask them” is more useful than a confident guess.

1. The capacity problem nobody mentions

Five venues north of the bridge publish 200 or more: The Spencer Hotel (ballroom to 500), North Shore Golf Club (220 seated / 300 cocktail), Bruce Mason Centre (406 banquet), Fantail & Turtle at Smales Farm (250 dining), and arguably Devonport Yacht Club at 180 standing. Everything else tops out between 120 and 180.

This matters more than it sounds. Auckland’s average wedding is comfortably inside 180, so most couples never hit the ceiling. But if you’re planning a large family wedding — and on the Shore that increasingly means Chinese, Korean, Indian or Filipino families — the honest answer is that the region has very little for you above 200 seated, and only one true hotel ballroom.

The Spencer Hotel in Takapuna is the outlier, with a 682m² ballroom to 500 that divides into four, and rooms upstairs. It’s the only venue on the Shore that solves capacity and accommodation in one booking.

North Shore Golf Club in Albany is the best 200-plus room that actually feels like a wedding rather than a conference — 220 seated, 300 cocktail, floor-to-ceiling windows over the course. If you want scale without a ballroom, start there.

3. Devonport & Narrow Neck

This is the prettiest corner of the Shore and the one with the most heritage. It’s also where the permit questions get complicated — see §7.

The Officers Mess

Narrow Neck. The region’s best-known wedding venue, and deservedly so: a clifftop position at Fort Takapuna with Rangitoto sitting north-east, so the island falls naturally behind a ceremony rather than off to one side. 160 seated across a 132m² main room joining a second. Catering is compulsory in-house — their wording is that “self catering is not an option,” with the cake exempted — and BYO wine or champagne carries a $20 per person charge.

Worth knowing: the same address, 170 Vauxhall Road, also houses Fort Takapuna — The Barracks, an Auckland Council community venue in the restored 1939 barracks, bookable 5am to midnight seven days. It’s an entirely different proposition — unstaffed, kitchens in each room, you bring everything — and dramatically cheaper. Two very different weddings at one address.

McHugh’s of Cheltenham

Beachfront Devonport, with Rangitoto, North Head and the Waitematā in view, hosting 50 to 180 with in-house sit-down and buffet packages. It’s the one Shore venue that reads as a classic Auckland waterfront wedding.

Devonport Yacht Club

Takes 120 seated, 150 cocktail, 180 unseated, on King Edward Parade. Its rules are unusually clear and unusually strict: no BYO alcohol at all — everything goes through the club bar — and external caterers must come from an approved list, with a $200 kitchen fee and manager approval. Hire runs in eight-hour blocks, 8am–4pm or 4pm–midnight.

Wakatere Boating Club

Narrow Neck Beach. The opposite of the Officers Mess, and much rarer: self-catering or your own caterer is welcome, and full BYO alcohol is permitted with no licence needed for a private function. 120 guests, a deck with bifolds, beach access by ramp, Rangitoto through pōhutukawa. Their own FAQ is refreshingly honest that residential noise limits make it “not the place for very loud music,” with music finishing at midnight. For a couple who want control rather than a package, this is the best-value venue on the Shore.

4. Takapuna, Milford & the Bays

The Spencer Hotel

The capacity answer — a 682m² ballroom to 500, divisible into four, with studios and suites upstairs. Nothing else north of the bridge is in this bracket.

Bruce Mason Centre

Seats 406 banquet with 820 cocktail, looking over Takapuna Beach to Rangitoto, with tiered seating that retracts for gala dinners. It’s a theatre first, so it suits a large formal reception better than an intimate one — the smaller Killarney rooms max at 50.

Fairway Events Centre

Wairau Valley. Publishes an all-inclusive rate from $110 per person for 70 to 170, with a built-in dance floor, projection screens and an outdoor deck with a second bar. Catering runs through Toast; other caterers may incur fees. It’s one of the few Shore venues publishing a per-head number at all.

Milford Cruising Club

Takes 120 beachfront with a marina and a pōhutukawa reserve, and ceremonies on the beach or reserve. Note it’s Anise Catering only — their site states plainly that they do not offer self-catered or BYO-caterer events.

Browns Bay Marine Centre

The value pick on the whole coast: $875 plus a $500 bond, 60 seated or 90 cocktail, panoramic beach and Rangitoto views, fully open catering, BYO permitted — and a two-and-a-half day hire covering the day before, the day, and until 10am the morning after. It’s a non-profit, which is why it prices like that.

Pupuke Golf Club

Campbells Bay. Takes 140, with panoramic Rangitoto and Hauraki Gulf views from a terrace. No outside catering is allowed.

Sir Peter Blake MERC

Long Bay. Puts 80 guests in a glass hall over a marine reserve, with beachfront ceremonies and a commercial kitchen. It’s smoke-free and confetti-free.

Also here: Lake House Arts in Takapuna (1800s heart-kauri buildings, six galleries, gardens, café, free parking), Regatta on Takapuna’s Main Beach with floor-to-ceiling glass on the sand, Elements of Castor Bay for 30 in a beachfront villa with a three-bedroom residence, and The Wharf at Northcote Point, over the water with the city skyline across the harbour.

5. Albany & the Hibiscus Coast

North Shore Golf Club

Albany, and the standout of the region — 220 seated, 300 cocktail, floor-to-ceiling windows over the course. The best large-capacity wedding room in the region.

Further north the character changes.

Wainui Golf Club

Near Silverdale. Has David Trubridge lighting, lake and countryside views and a Top Tee Deck ceremony spot, at 90 seated or 120 with the wall open.

Northridge Golf Resort at Ōrewa has a private nine-hole course, 27 rooms sleeping up to 44, and a family-owned countryside feel.

Gulf Harbour Yacht Club

Takes 120 in the main room with a large covered outdoor area with drop-down clear panels — a genuinely good wet-weather setup — plus free AV. No BYO.

The Y Shakespear Lodge

Inside Shakespear Regional Park at Army Bay. Unusual and underrated: 90 guests, 11 bunk rooms sleeping around 90, private beach access, native bush, a barn and rec hall, about 50 car parks. Published rates are $30 per person per day weekdays (minimum $900/day) and $92.50 per person at weekends, with weekday catering compulsory outside the Christmas period. For a wedding where guests stay the weekend, nothing else on the coast does this.

Boutique Barn

Puhoi. Fifty guests in aged kauri barns with wide kauri boards and chandeliers, and all catering handled offsite — bring a caterer or a food truck.

Couldrey House

Waiwera, inside Wenderholm. Ceremony only — around 50 indoors in the Whitney Room or in the garden, a two-hour slot plus 30 minutes set-up, with 50 chairs, trestles, a signing table and two staff included. A small toast in the garden is permitted but there are no receptions. Pair it with a reception elsewhere.

6. Catering and BYO — the short version

The Shore is unusually locked down on catering. Most venues are in-house only, and several ban BYO alcohol outright. The three genuine exceptions are Wakatere Boating Club (self-cater or own caterer, full BYO alcohol), Browns Bay Marine Centre (fully open, BYO permitted) and Boutique Barn (all catering offsite). If bringing your own caterer matters — and for most large cultural weddings it does — your list is short.

No BYO alcohol at all: Devonport Yacht Club, Gulf Harbour Yacht Club (“sorry, no BYO”), Milford Cruising Club.
No outside catering: Pupuke Golf Club, The Officers Mess, Ōrewa Surf Club Café (in-house with a minimum spend and no venue-hire model), Whangaparāoa Golf Club — whose terms state no refreshments may be brought onto the premises by the hirer.
Corkage where published: The Officers Mess at $20 per person for wine or champagne. Almost nobody else publishes a figure.
Kitchen fee where published: Devonport Yacht Club, $200 for an approved external caterer.

7. Beaches, parks and permits

Three different authorities govern the outdoor spots people want on the Shore, and they have different rules. Auckland Council runs the regional parks. DOC holds Fort Takapuna Historic Reserve. And Maungauika / North Head is administered by the Tūpuna Maunga Authority on behalf of Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau — not DOC, despite what a lot of guides say.

Auckland Council regional parks — Long Bay, Shakespear, Wenderholm

A ceremony on its own may not need a permit. Anything more does. Council requires one if you’re using marquees, caterers, alcohol or amplified sound, or taking photos for commercial use.
Receptions are not allowed in regional parks — Council states they must be held at a private venue.
Confetti is prohibited. Bubbles are suggested.
Processing can take up to six weeks. Ranger line 09 301 0101.
Shakespear specifically: no amplified music, including Bluetooth speakers. Smoke-free, all rubbish out, outdoor fires illegal. Bookable-site pricing changed on 1 July 2026.

Maungauika / North Head — permit required, specific locations only

The Tūpuna Maunga Authority states that all weddings on a tūpuna maunga require a permit, and are permitted at named locations only. On Maungauika those are the Barracks building, Lover’s Cove and the tennis court. Smoking, alcohol, ash scattering and open fires are prohibited at permitted events. Minor-event fees are published from $90 application plus $50 location for community events, excluding GST, with lead times of one to two weeks. All drone flying needs prior approval.

Takarunga / Mount Victoria does not appear on the approved wedding-location list. Don’t plan a ceremony there on the assumption it’s allowed — check with the Authority first.

Fort Takapuna Historic Reserve — confirm this one yourself

The Officers Mess states on its own site that marrying on the reserve or the beach below requires a Department of Conservation permit. DOC’s own page for the reserve publishes visitor rules but says nothing about weddings or events. DOC’s general position is that all events on public conservation land require a concession, with no published exemption for a small ceremony. Ring DOC Permissions and get the answer in writing before you plan around it — this is the one question on the Shore where the published sources don’t line up.

Takapuna Beach and Narrow Neck Beach are local reserves rather than regional parks, so the regional-park rules above don’t govern them and Council publishes no beach-ceremony threshold for the Shore. Call 09 301 0101.

8. Closed, moved, or not what the listings say

Venue directories in this region are badly out of date. Before you fall for a listing:

Gulf Harbour Country Club is closed. The site has been reported overgrown and unsafe, with community trusts working on a purchase proposal. Its old web domain now serves online-casino content — do not visit it. The working Gulf Harbour venue is the Yacht Club, which is a different organisation.
Peace & Plenty Inn, Devonport — listed as no longer operating, yet still promoted on tourism sites.
Duders of Devonport — still on directories, but absent from McHugh’s own current functions page. Assume closed until confirmed.
The Chapel of St Christopher at the Devonport Naval Base is restricted to serving and ex-serving personnel, military and civilian.
Torpedo Bay Navy Museum publishes a 16-person conference room only. It is not a published wedding venue, whatever the directories imply.
North Harbour Stadium publishes no function capacities, catering policy or wedding information at all — the “function centre” wedding listings are directory-only.

Which North Shore wedding venue holds the most guests?

The Spencer Hotel in Takapuna, whose 682 square metre ballroom takes up to 500 and divides into four rooms, with accommodation on site. Can we bring our own caterer to a North Shore wedding venue?

Do you need a permit to get married at Fort Takapuna or on the beach below?

The Spencer Hotel in Takapuna has studios and suites; the Esplanade Hotel in Devonport has 16 rooms including a penthouse in a 1903 Edwardian building; Northridge Golf Resort at Ōrewa has 27 rooms sleeping up to 44; and The Y Shakespear Lodge at Army Bay has 11 bunk rooms sleeping around 90 with private beach access. Elements of Castor Bay includes a three-bedroom guest residence for small weddings.

Is Gulf Harbour Country Club still a wedding venue?

No. It has closed, the site has been reported overgrown and unsafe, and community trusts have been working on a purchase proposal. Its former web domain now serves unrelated content and should not be visited. Several wedding directories still list it. The functioning venue at Gulf Harbour is the Gulf Harbour Yacht Club, a separate organisation taking 120 in its main room with a covered outdoor area.

Photographing a North Shore wedding

We are Auckland-based and there is no travel charge north of the bridge — Devonport, Takapuna, Albany, the Hibiscus Coast or Matakana. Here is what the Shore is actually like to photograph, which is a different question from which venue to book.

Rangitoto does most of the work. From Devonport it sits low and centred in the frame, and it is the single thing that makes Shore photographs recognisably Auckland. The Officers’ Mess at Fort Takapuna gives you clifftop, coast and volcano within a few metres of the door — no transfer, no time lost. McHugh’s of Cheltenham puts you directly on the sand with North Head rising behind it. If the view matters to you, book east-facing and be outside in the late afternoon.

Plan for the bridge, not the distance. The map says twenty minutes from the CBD. On a Friday or Saturday afternoon it is rarely twenty minutes. Build an extra twenty into any city-to-Shore transfer, and if guests are travelling both ways, say so on the invitation. This is the most common thing that quietly costs couples their portrait window.

Indoor light is better up here than in town. The Bruce Mason Centre has natural light in every room, some with Rangitoto and Takapuna views. North Shore Golf Club has a genuine 1930s ballroom with period detail and tall windows — rare in Auckland. Lake House Arts Centre gives you white gallery walls and an 1880s villa beside Lake Pupuke. None of these need the heavy lighting a CBD ballroom does.

Further north is a different wedding. Matakana, Warkworth and Leigh are an hour from the city and worth it — the Redwoods Treehouse is the most distinctive built structure in the region, Brick Bay’s Glass House sits over a lake with a sculpture trail attached, and Matakana Retreat has the best sunset elevation of the northern venues. Treat these as near-destination weddings: accommodation matters, and so does the drive home in the dark.
