The venue guide

Where you can actually
book the day

Queenstown, Arrowtown, Gibbston, Cromwell, Wānaka, Tekapo and Glenorchy. If it is just the two of you, our Queenstown elopement packages put the whole day together — celebrant, flowers, hair and make-up, the lot.

Kia ora! Kamusta? Our location guide covers where you can stand — the mountains, the lakefronts, the places you drive to. This one covers where you can book: the lodges, wineries, woolsheds, chapels and stations that will take a wedding, from two people to two hundred. The supplier guide covers the people — celebrants, florists, hair and make-up, gown and suit hire.

Three things this guide does that the others do not

It tells you which venues will take just the two of you, because most will not and almost nobody publishes the minimum. It tells you which ones a helicopter can land at, which turns out to be a much shorter list than people assume. And it tells you which ones have quietly stopped taking weddings, which no venue directory will ever tell you.

Capacities and prices below were published on the venue’s own page as at September 2026. They move constantly — we confirm for your date before you commit to anything.

Small enough for just the two of you

The hard part of an elopement is not finding somewhere beautiful. It is finding somewhere beautiful that will seat four people without charging you for eighty. These have all published that they will.

Where the helicopter can land

Confirmed on each venue’s own page. Worth knowing before you fall in love with somewhere the pilot cannot get to.

Helicopter is the only way in

Minaret Station (a 50,000-acre station in a glacial valley near Wānaka) and Mt Nicholas Station (100,000 acres on the far shore of Lake Wakatipu, reachable by helicopter or boat and nothing else). If you want a day nobody can gatecrash, these are it.

Dedicated helipads

Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat has five. Whare Kea Lodge has a registered pad on the front lawn. The Hide at Lake Hāwea Station, Edgewater and The Winehouse in Gibbston all have their own.

Helicopter access listed

Peregrine Wines, The Rippon Hall, Te Kano Estate, Gibbston Valley Lodge and Blanket Bay at Glenorchy. Stoneridge Estate goes further and sells its own heli-wedding product flying couples to mountain peaks.

Questions people actually ask

Do we even need a venue?

For two people, often not. A celebrant, two witnesses and a place you are allowed to stand is the whole legal requirement, and much of what makes Queenstown worth flying to is outdoors and free. Our location guide covers those spots.

A venue starts earning its keep when you want three things: shelter you can rely on, somewhere to feed people, and somewhere to get ready that is not a hotel room. If you want none of those, skip it.

Which venues will take just the two of us?

Fewer than you would hope, and almost nobody publishes the number — which is why the first table on this page exists. Around twenty venues in the district state a genuine minimum of twenty people or fewer, and a handful go down to two.

The pattern is that lodges and small estates will take a couple on a stated elopement package, while function centres and larger wineries will not, because their pricing assumes a room full of people.

What is a minimum spend, and should I be worried about it?

It is the amount you must spend on food and drink regardless of how many people turn up. A venue with a $6,000 minimum will happily host eight guests — you just pay as though you brought forty.

For a small wedding this is the single biggest hidden cost, and it is the question to ask first, before availability and before the hire fee. A venue with no hire fee and a large minimum can cost more than one with a large hire fee and none.

How far ahead do we need to book?

For a Saturday between December and March, twelve to eighteen months is normal for the well-known venues. Winter and weekdays are dramatically easier — often a few months.

Elopement packages at the smaller places move faster than full weddings and can sometimes be had inside a season. If your dates are fixed and short, ask about weekdays before you widen your venue search; a Tuesday in February opens doors a Saturday will not.

Can we bring our own photographer, celebrant and suppliers?

Almost always yes for photography and the celebrant. Catering and beverage are where venues get restrictive — many require you to use their kitchen and bar, and that is usually where the minimum spend lives.

Ask specifically about preferred supplier lists. Some venues require you to choose from theirs; others simply recommend. It changes who you can book, and it is easier to find out before you fall in love with the room.

What happens if it rains?

This is the real argument for booking a venue rather than a viewpoint. Ask two questions: is there a wet-weather space that fits everyone, and at what time must you decide to move indoors.

That second one catches people out. Some venues need the call made the morning before so they can reset a room. Queenstown showers are local and short — it can rain at Frankton and be clear twenty minutes up the road — so a venue that lets you decide an hour out is worth more than one with a prettier backup room.

Can a helicopter land at the venue?

A number can, and they are listed in their own section above — several have dedicated helipads. The rest cannot, either because of terrain, neighbours, or their own consent conditions.

If flying matters, treat it as a filter on your venue shortlist rather than something to sort out later. Our helicopter landing guide covers the sites themselves.

Queenstown, Wānaka or somewhere quieter?

Queenstown has the most venues, the most suppliers and the most competition for dates. Wānaka is an hour away, meaningfully calmer, and the light holds longer on that side of the range. Cromwell and Gibbston give you vineyards at lower prices than the lakefront. Tekapo and Glenorchy give you scenery almost nobody else has, and very few suppliers.

The trade is always the same: the further you go from Queenstown, the better the exclusivity and the harder the logistics. Beyond about an hour out, budget for your suppliers travelling and for the fact that some simply will not.

New, and not on everyone’s list

Ayrburn — Arrowtown

Opened 9 December 2023

The big one. A restored 1860s farm precinct turned into nine separate spaces — barns, a woolshed, a dell, a loft, bars — with published package pricing, which almost no venue here does. Small enough at one end for twelve people, large enough at the other for a full wedding. If you have not heard of it, that is only because it is new.

Te Kano Estate — Bannockburn

A new-generation cantilevered cellar door on Felton Road, in the best sub-region of Central Otago. Elopement-first rather than elopement-tolerated, and helicopter accessible.

Te Puna Mahara — Cromwell

Opening July 2026

A 400-seat auditorium and 240-seat banquet space at the Cromwell Memorial Events Centre. There is nothing of that scale in Cromwell now, so if you want Central Otago with a big guest list, this is about to change what is possible.

Nest QT at Kamana Lakehouse — Queenstown

A recently formalised four-room events offering with fully published capacities and a stated wet-weather option — a rarer combination here than it should be. Floor-to-ceiling glass onto the lake and the Remarkables.

The Cairns Alpine Resort — Lake Tekapo

Actively marketing weddings now, and a genuine option in a district that has very few. One catch, stated plainly on their own site: off-peak only.

Tekapo, Mount Cook & the Mackenzie

Worth knowing before you plan a Mackenzie wedding: the whole district has only eight registered celebrants, and several venues take weddings in limited seasons only. It is a spectacular place to marry and a thin one to organise in — start earlier than you would for Queenstown.

Worth knowing

Things that are true today and that no venue directory will tell you, because directories do not remove listings.

Kinross, Gibbston — not taking weddings

Their own page says they will not host weddings for the next 24 months. Rehearsal dinners and accommodation only. It still appears on plenty of venue lists.

Waitiri Creek has moved out of the church

The old church everyone remembers is no longer the venue — they operate from a woolshed cellar door now and no longer market weddings. Winter is by appointment.

Camp Glenorchy is now The Headwaters Eco Lodge

Same place, new name. If you are searching the old one you will think it has closed.

Season and minimum restrictions

The Hermitage takes weddings May to September only. The Cairns at Tekapo is off-peak only. Lake Ohau Lodge requires 80 adults staying on the standard package. Lakestone Lodge states that exclusive hire is not available for weddings at all. Criffel Station now appears to do elopements only.

Three we could not check properly

Mt Difficulty’s events page says only “check back soon”. Moonlight Lodge is listed as unavailable and its own site would not load. Mount Soho has only a bare page with no capacity or status. We would ring all three before you set your heart on one.

And a general one about capacity

Published maximums are a starting point, not a rule. Several venues here will take a smaller wedding than they advertise if you ask in the right season, and a few will not take one at their published minimum in February. We ask on your behalf rather than assume.

Tell us the shape of the day

Numbers, season, and whether you want to see the mountains from the table or just get to them afterwards. We will shortlist three, tell you honestly which will actually be available, and say which we would pick.

We photograph weddings and elopements across all of this. Start with Queenstown weddings, the location guide for the outdoor spots, or the landing guide if a helicopter is in the plan.

Capacities, prices and availability were published on each venue’s own page in September 2026 and change without notice. Ayrburn, Millbrook and Matakauri block automated access, so those figures came from current third-party listings — we confirm all of it for your date.
